About Upper Falls

Upper Falls is the Newton village that even some Newton residents forget about — and that's part of its charm. Tucked along the Charles River at the Needham border, it's small, quiet, and genuinely affordable by Newton standards. Needham Street is the commercial spine, with a mix of businesses and restaurants. The Hemlock Gorge Reservation, where the Charles River passes through a narrow rocky gorge beneath Echo Bridge, is one of the hidden natural treasures of Greater Boston. Upper Falls has a neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood feel — it's Newton, but it doesn't feel like the Newton most people picture. That can be an advantage for the right buyer.

Property Character

Newton's most affordable single-family inventory. Smaller homes on smaller lots — Capes, ranches, and modest Colonials from the 1930s-1960s. Some two-families. Less architectural distinction than villages like Chestnut Hill or Waban, but solid, well-built housing stock with renovation potential. A few condos in converted mill buildings.

Getting Around

No Green Line stop and no commuter rail — Upper Falls is a car-dependent village. Needham Street provides access to Route 9 and I-95/Route 128. Bus route 59 provides some connectivity. Driving to Newton Centre or Needham Center takes about 10 minutes. The trade-off for affordability is less transit access.

Schools

Served by Peirce Elementary (K-5), with some addresses falling in the Williams Elementary zone. Middle school is Oak Hill. High school is Newton South. The small village size means the school community is tight-knit, and kids from Upper Falls tend to know each other well.
