Twenty years ago, Kendall Square was a collection of parking lots and industrial buildings that emptied out at 5 PM. Today it's arguably the most valuable commercial real estate on the East Coast outside of Midtown Manhattan. Google, Amazon, Moderna, Sanofi, Pfizer, and hundreds of startups occupy millions of square feet of lab and office space. The residential side has followed: new luxury apartment and condo buildings line Third Street and Main Street, and the old East Cambridge neighborhood to the north — Portuguese bakeries, triple-deckers, and neighborhood bars — is being gradually transformed by the wealth spilling over from the square. Buying here is a bet on the continued growth of the knowledge economy, and it's a bet that has paid off spectacularly for the last two decades.
