Porter Square / North Cambridge
Where Cambridge gets residential — quieter streets, the Minuteman Bikeway, family-friendly parks, and Red Line access with a neighborhood feel.
About Porter Square / North Cambridge
Porter Square is where Cambridge starts to feel less like a city and more like a neighborhood. The square itself has a Red Line stop, a small shopping center (the Porter Square Shopping Center, anchored by a large Star Market), and a handful of good restaurants and coffee shops. But the real appeal is the residential streets that radiate outward — North Cambridge to the west, the Avon Hill neighborhood to the south, and the quieter blocks stretching toward Somerville. The housing stock is a mix of multi-families, Victorians, and some Colonials with actual yards. Families are the dominant demographic: the streets have kids on bikes, the parks have Little League games, and the Minuteman Bikeway — an 11-mile paved path to Arlington and beyond — starts right at the Alewife T station nearby. It's Cambridge without the intensity.
Property Character
A genuine mix of single-family homes, two-families, and multi-families on residential streets with mature trees. Larger lots than Harvard Square or Central. More family-oriented, with actual front porches and backyard gardens.
